The story Duel at Kitanoji was originally published in Usagi Yojimbo, Volume III #60. This issue had a variant inside front cover: one version contained a picture of Katsuichi, the other had a picture of Nakamura Koji. According to Stan Sakai, "The variant was Editor Diana [Schutz]'s idea, and that issue was not advertised as any sort of variant. We just thought it was a fun idea, and appropriate to show the two duelists."[1]
